Although you might never look forward to that time of the month, regular
menstrual cramps can make your period a drag or even a debilitating pain
in the back, literally.
These 6 tips will help you deal with period cramps and win...
1. Exercise....
This might sound a little crazy and you might be thinking to yourself,I
can barely move, let alone exercise. However, brisk walking, or any type
of physical activity, can help to ease your belly pain. When you're
doing any type of aerobic exercise, your body is pumping more blood;
this helps to release endorphins to counteract the prostaglandins and
reduce your cramps. Exercising three to four times a week is good for
the overall health of your body, but it is especially important if
you're prone to painful menstrual cramps..
2. Take pain relievers...
For women who have PMS-related pain such as cramping, breast tenderness,
backaches, or headaches, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain relievers
can provide some relief.
3. Improve your diet...
A salt-heavy diet can cause bloating, caffeine can aggravate
irritability or anxiety, alcohol may worsen depression, and too much
sugar can destabilize your blood sugar and mood.
Try to eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains the week before
your period.
And it’s not just what you eat, but how you eat. Aim to eat at regular
intervals to avoid dips and spikes in blood sugar, says Joanne
Piscitelli, MD, associate clinical professor of obstetrics and
gynecology at Duke University in Durham, N.C.
"It is worth changing your diet habits before moving on to medical
therapies, because you are less likely to have side effects," she says.
4. Heat treatment...Doctors recommend using heat as a way to relieve
pain associated with menstrual cramping, as well as helping the cramps
subside themselves. There are a couple different courses of home
treatments you can follow:
Get a hot water bottle and apply it to the stomach or lower abdomen.
Wait 15 to 20 minutes to see if cramps have gotten better.
If that doesn't work, try taking a hot bath with a cup or more of Epsom
salts, which are a mild muscle relaxer. Submerge your body fully
underneath the Epsom salts and keep the water hot by turning the faucet
on, if necessary.
5. Consider herbal remedies. There are some herbal remedies that may be effective in relieving cramping and mood swings.
You might consider using black cohosh, chaste berry, ginger, raspberry leaf, or dandelion.
6. Vitamins..A couple days before your period is set to begin, make sure
you're getting enough vitamins, as well as the right kind of vitamins.
These include:
Vitamin E. Take 500 International Units (IU’s) of vitamin E per day,
continuing it through the first couple days of bleeding. Some evidence
(although not scientifically rigorous) suggests that vitamin B1, vitamin
B6, and fish oil supplements may help women tame their punishing
periods.
If the above tips fails, visit a doctor. If your period is making you
feel like you want to roll up in a ball and forget the world, definitely
see a doctor.
